Buckle up, because, as the title suggests, this piece is an intense thrill ride from start to finish. The idea here was to create a short, high-energy saxophone piece that would burst out of the gate and not look back, and would be appropriate as a concert closer. Although this is clearly not a jazz composition, there are certainly some readily perceived jazz influences. There is a subtle swing to the asymmetrical meter that is employed almost from start to finish in this piece, and many of the melody lines and harmonies heard in the piece are subtly reminiscent of jazz as well.
This piece makes use of a family of scales that do not repeat at the octave as conventional western scales do. This makes it possible for the music to be highly chromatic (at times) but also to clearly modulate to different “keys” as tonal music does. The title is a pun on the well-known flute piece by Varèse, Density 21.5.
